Fortifications

by Katherine Goda

The floor is dipped, five hundred years of history,

like a child trapped in a parent’s embrace

while adults smile across a bowed head

or look away and miss the strength of this:

not armour, crenellations, arrow slits

but standing, still, refusing to be shamed,

worn down but not worn out or away.
