The Story Republic is a travelling world of words that celebrates the place of story in Cornwall’s culture. A first of its kind in Cornwall and beyond, The Story Republic is an exciting programme of events and installations to delight and inspire audiences through the wonder of the written word.

The engaging front face of The Story Republic is a team of performers: The Story Republicans. They are a key element of the project who perform in schools, festivals, events and in The Story Republic installation itself and as storytellers in The Wonderful World of Oliver Jeffers and Bear Hunt, Chocolate Cake and Bad Things.  See the website for more information about the project www.thestoryrepublic.co.uk/the-story-republicans

We would like to recruit 3 or 4 Story Republicans to join the existing team for a programme in Autumn 2016 and beyond. The training project is aimed at emerging theatre performers who are interested in working in a variety of spaces from the street to galleries, castles to classrooms with a repertoire of songs, poems and short stories.  You will need to be enthusiastic, at ease vocally and able to make yourself heard, keen to work in an ensemble, willing and able to sing and to be bold!  If you play a musical instrument that is a bonus but not essential.  We do not perform plays.

Most of the work is in Cornwall in particular this Autumn at the National Trust Trelissick Gardens and in St Austell .  You do need access to transport as some of the places are difficult to get to on public transport.   This work is best suited to people living in Cornwall.

Learning Outcomes for the programme:

  • Increase existing skill base in a professional environment
  • Gain understanding of the sector and establish new contacts
  • Increase employability
  • Increase understanding of working with different audiences
  • Broaden awareness of opportunities in education – both formal and informal
  • Broaden and increase repertoire under knowledge relating to festivals and touring circuits
  • Increase entrepreneurialism and independent working
  • Increase personal skills such as team working, time management, travel planning

The training will consist of working with writer and director Annamaria Murphy and a singing leader. After the training there will be freelance paid work.  This is not a tour and the work is sporadic so we are flexible around other work commitments.

The deadline for applications is:  Friday 5th August at 5pm
