Creative Translation in Cornish / Treylyans Awenek yn Kernewek
The Writers’ Block and Cornwall Council’s Cornish Language Office are looking for participants to take part in a free workshop for Cornish speakers and translators who would like to develop their skills in creative and literary translation. / The Writers’ Block ha Sodhva an Yeth Kernewek Konsel Kernow a hwil kevrenogyon dhe gemeres rann yn shoppa ober heb kost rag Kernewegoryon ha treylyoryon Gernewek hag a vynnsa displegya aga sleynethow yn treylyans awenek ha liennek.
The three hour session will look at the processes involved in carrying out more creative translations of texts such as poetry, song lyrics and other creative writing, looking at topics such as matching metre, following rhyme schemes and capturing the mood of the piece.
With an increasing number of musicians and writers wanting to use Cornish in their work, now is the perfect time to upskill more Cornish speakers and translators to be able to carry out this sort of translation.
The workshop will be led by freelance Cornish translator, Elizabeth Ellis, whose work includes the Awen award winning song cycle, “Arlodhes a Shalott,” composed by Matthew Thomason and featuring her literary translation of Tennyson’s poem, “The Lady of Shalott;” and the translation for the Cornish dubbed animation of Julia Donaldson’s much loved children’s story, “The Highway Rat.”
A date for this workshop has yet to be fixed. Participants should have a good working knowledge of Cornish, but no prior experience in translation is required.
