In collaboration with Asone Music Education Hub, we invited four KS2 classes to delve into the rich history of Women in Cornwall through song writing workshops. The project centred on exploring the legacy of Cornwall’s most influential women, using the Women of Cornwall exhibition, curated by Kresen Kernow, as a key source of inspiration.
Women in Cornwall
The project began with a visit to Kresen Kernow in Redruth, where students were introduced to the archives and immersed in the stories of remarkable women from Cornwall’s history. They learned about these women’s lives, achievements, and the impact they had on their communities. The students were encouraged to reflect on these stories, with the aim of capturing the essence of these historical figures in their own song lyrics. This exploration was guided by Angeline Morrison, an award-winning singer-songwriter whose expertise in storytelling through song helped students to craft lyrics.
Following the initial workshop, a series of follow-up sessions took place at the schools, where the students worked with Christine Judge from Cornwall Music Service Trust. Christine assisted the students in setting their lyrics to music, allowing them to transform their written words into fully realised songs. Through these sessions, the children developed their vocal skills, learning how to bring their songs to life, and gaining confidence in their ability to perform and express themselves through music.
The project culminated in a special celebratory event held at Kresen Kernow, where the students performed their songs. The event was a joyous occasion, with over 120 students proudly sharing their creations. It was a true celebration of the students’ hard work and a moment to recognise the power of combining history, writing and song.
