Date: 19th July 2023, Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Location: The Writer’s Block

Speak to Me! Some Tips for Creating Interesting Dialogue with Sarah Halliday
10-1pm 19 July
The Writers’ Block, The Ladder, 2-4 Clinton Road, Redruth, TR16 5TF
Tickets: £5/£8/£10/£12

Writing really good dialogue can often be a challenge even for experienced writers. Dialogue serves several roles at the same time: it reveals character, it implies potential sources of inner and outer conflict, and it can move the story forward. But where to start? In this workshop, we will read some examples of dialogue in texts that work, and explore some techniques for  developing dialogue for the characters we create.

Book tickets HERE.

“I’ve got these great characters, and the plot is just awesome but when I stick Mary-Jane in a room with Detective Appleby, they have nothing to say to each other!!”

“Surely not? they have so much in common?”

“I know, I know. It doesn’t make any sense!”

“Have you thought about asking for help?”

“No one can help me. This is my burden to bear – alone. I brought them into the world, I must find a way to let them live and breathe like real live, human people do…”

“Why don’t you take your characters to the Writers’ Block on July 19th at 10.00? I hear there’s a fabbo workshop on dialogue happening, which could get you and your characters out of your communal rut.”

“Really? is there help out there?”

“There is. And cookies and nuts and Bio fruit galore! not to mention tea and coffee.”

“Tea and coffee? For me? Oh it’s too much – I can’t take it all in…”

“Ah, but you will! just get your butt down there, along with your imagination and paper and pen and the rest – “

“Yes?”

“The rest will just…….”

to be continued…
