Are you a creative person with a bit of time on your hands? Are you interested in volunteering with children and young people?

The Writers Block is looking for volunteers to co-devise and deliver after school clubs for 7 – 11 year olds. We would ask you to co-run a series of 3 – 6 sessions, once a week from early October. The activities are up to you, but would need to link to writing or story in some way – creative writing, poetry, drama, storytelling, art, for example. Sessions need to be a fun, engaging, imaginative and with a degree of challenge. You would be supported by a member of our team and other volunteers.

Who are we looking for?

You might be a young person or student who wants to get relevant experience on your CV, a former teacher looking to volunteer in a creative environment, or a writer, performer or artist keen to get some informal teaching experience.

Our activity at The Writers’ Block

It is now six months since we launched The Writers’ Block in The Ladder in Clinton Road, Redruth in the thick of the upheaval and building works as part of the major renovations to the whole building.  Despite leaks, noise and the all-pervasive dust we have delivered an exciting programme of workshops, masterclasses, events, readings, rehearsals, sharings and writer residencies.  We have welcomed small children and young people, community groups and emerging writers and performers.

We would now like to offer more comprehensive out of school provision.  We already run a Young Writers’ programme for over 12s and also one off workshops and opportunities for that age e.g. journalism and speech writing.  We deliver regular storytelling activities for pre-school children through our Little Story Seekers programme in particular with Redruth and Camborne Libraries.  We now want to begin to address the gap for activities for 7-11 year olds after school and in the holidays and an important part of that is building a skilled creative volunteer team.
